2022 - NOVEMBER

First, as we wrap up the Fall Certification cycle, I want to congratulate all who earned CPAN or CAPA certifications. This is an accomplishment to be celebrated. I would love to hear your certification stories at rdyer@aspan.org.

ASPAN’s Perianesthesia Development Institute (PDI) in Kansas City was a wonderful balance of information, resources and networking supporting ASPAN and Component leaders in efforts to care for themselves and their responsibilities. I was so blessed to spend time with leaders from seven of the Region 1 Components as we shared and learned from one another. There were many new faces this year, a testament to our regrowth following the pandemic.

There are lots of plans under way in Region 1. PANANM (New Mexico) will be having a Winter Seminar in Albuquerque Jan 21. RMPANA (Rocky Mountain) is looking at early February for a Winter Workshop. PANAC’s (California) Winter Seminar is planned for Ventura February 11. NevPANA (Nevada) wraps up winter with a March 4 event in Reno. Spring opens with NPANA’s (Northwest) March 18 Spring Fling in Spokane. USPAN (Utah) is planning for a spring event in Salt Lake City in May and AZPANA’s (Arizona) next event is being planned for June 10.

PeriAnesthesia Nurse Awareness Week (PANAW) is being celebrated Febuary 6-12. The theme, Perianesthesia Nurses: Strong, United, Resilient is a powerful message. Be the spark and plan something at your facility. Be sure to take photos to share with your Component Webmast or Newsletter Editor and with Breathline Editor, Barb Godden at bgodden@aspan.org.

Region 1 is excited to support ASPAN’s 42nd National Conference April 28-May 1 in Denver! Let’s all celebrate the Heart and Science of Caring in the Mile High City. Watch for opportunities to volunteer to make this the best one yet. Plan for the Representative Assembly where members can make their voices heard through your selected Representatives

2022 - April

The weather is beginning to heat up and so is the excitement in ASPAN and especially in Region 1.

NPANA (The Northwest PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association) is planning a Spring Fling virtual seminar on April 30 with ASPAN Immediate Past President Jennie Kilgore and Secretary Susan Norris among the impressive slate of speakers. RMPANA (The Rocky Mountain PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association) will meet live in Denver on April 30 for a Spring Workshop featuring some very current topics followed by hors d’oeuvres at the Peak Lounge (sounds amazing)! USPAN (Utah Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses) has a virtual seminar May 14 featuring ASPAN Past President Jacque Crosson among the powerhouse list of presenters. AZPANA (Arizona PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association) is having a virtual summer seminar with Maureen McLauglin, Jacque Crosson and more. PANAC (PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association of California) has a live Travelling Road Show event, the Monterey Summer Seminar slated June 11. I am excited to travel to Reno for the NevPANA (Nevada PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association) Summer Seminar and Meeting on June 25 where PANAC President Brian Harradine and I will speak.

I also hear of many plans for fall seminars in Region 1, so keep your ears to the ground and an eye on your Component website for more information.

ASPAN’s National Conference in Philadelphia was tremendous! The excitement was palpable and the education sessions were world-class. And, guess what? It is not over yet. Beginning May 9, the virtual sessions become available to anyone who attended live or registers for virtual only. There is still time to register at www.aspan.org.

The ASPAN elections were held at the Representative Assembly (RA), congratulations to these newly elected members of the Board of Directors:

Alphonzo Baker-Vice President/President-elect Susan Norris-Secretary
Felicia Selman- Education Director
Melissa Davidson-Director of Clinical Practice Tracy Gaylon-Region 2 Director

Congratulations to NPANA and Editor Nery Leder for winning the coveted People’s Choice newsletter award. PANAC won the Dreamwalk award for most money raised by a Component. AZPANA, NPANA, PANAC and RMPANA all took home beautiful Shining Star Awards from the American Board of PeriAnesthesia Nursing Certification (ABPANC).

2021 October

It has been a very busy season for Region 1. Even in the midst of another COVID surge, we have many very strong Component leaders who are working hard on behalf of the membership. Beginning in September, our Region has had a flurry of seminars.

September 25: Arizona PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association (AzPANA) hybrid seminar in Tucson, Arizona.
October 2-3: Northwest PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association (NPANA) hybrid seminar in Billings, Montana.
October 9: Rocky Mountain PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association (RMPANA) hybrid seminar in Colorado Springs, CO.
October 16: Utah Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (USPAN) virtual seminar.
October 16: PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association of California (PANAC) virtual seminar.
November 6: PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association of New Mexico (PANANM) virtual seminar.

The variety of topics, expertise of speakers, and passion of the members has been incredible! I have been blessed to meet so many members around the Region and look forward to meeting many more.

November 13, current and up-and-coming leaders from around the country will be attending the hybrid Component Development Institute. This is an annual event designed to educate and inspire Component leaders. If you are involved in your local Component or have thought about becoming involved, this is an opportunity to learn more.

I can hardly contain my excitement about ASPAN’s 41st National Conference in Philadelphia April 7-10. Start making plans now. We are excited that the new weekend-based schedule will allow more bedside nurses to attend.

Congratulations to the many nurses who have earned CPAN or CAPA certification this fall. Please flood my email with your celebration photos at rdyer@aspan.org
