Reporting to the Chief, Occupational and Environmental Health Program, the Occupational Health Nurse provides health care to adult patients, including assessing and treating a wide variety of conditions, ailments, and injuries with emphasis on work-related injuries and illnesses. Involves providing healthcare services within the broadened scope of nursing practice. This includes diagnosis of illness and injury, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, ordering/furnishing medications and devices, and establishing plans of care that promote health care maintenance (Wellness) and illness prevention. Collaborates with a physician for general medical supervision.

Responsibilities

 

Clinical Responsibilities:

 

  • Perform history, physical examination, assessment and planning on patients who present to the Occupational Health Clinic with complaints of injury or illness thought to be due to work. This may include telehealth appointments.
  • Formulates appropriate disposition and/or treatment plan: Includes ordering and interpreting diagnostic test(s) including laboratory tests, radiographs, spirometry and hearing tests. Prescribes and administers therapeutic treatment modalities including medications, advises patients on how to use medications, performs select procedures; administers local anesthesia, and performs other medical functions, as authorized.
  • Determine work-relatedness and causation of injury or illness.
  • Maintain appointment template that assures appropriate access for occupational health scheduled and walk-in patients; keep pace within appointment systems during scheduled clinic time.
  • Discriminates between normal and abnormal findings and determines when to consult or to refer the patient to the Occupational Health Physician and/or community specialist.
  • Provides feedback and/or follow-up to patients in a timely fashion.
  • Provides appropriate referral to different specialty and/or subspecialty care as deemed appropriate for a particular clinical problem.
  • Case management of individual patients, which includes communication with supervisors, UCB department liaisons, UCB Disability Management Services and Sedgwick CMS.
  • Case management of all OHC patients.
  • Medical Surveillance/ Employee Screenings/ Employee medical examinations
  • Requires knowledge of OSHA and CalOSHA requirements and other state-of-the-art Occupational medical knowledge
  • Perform pre-placement, medical surveillance and other similar physical examinations, telehealth appointments, or on-line review of questionnaires for faculty and staff. Administers vaccines, tuberculin skin tests, vision, and other tests as needed and in scope of practice.
  • Screens injured workers for participation in the Occupational Wellness/WorkStrong program.

 

Emerging campus and public health issues, ie pandemic response

 

  • Assist with phone screening and ordering testing if indicated as part of campus public health policies.
  • Return to work clearance. Per campus guidelines in accordance with local public health recommendations, return to work is required in specific public health instances, ie pandemic response to protect campus safety.

 

Documentation of Practice

 

  • Records content of all patient encounters within the patient's medical record in the S-O-A-P format when appropriate.
  • Charts in a succinct, legible and accurate manner.
  • Charts in a timely fashion.
  • Charting reflects the process of care, patient progress and current patient status.
  • Documents and updates: medical problem list as appropriate, allergies and medications.
  • Accurately completes all forms relevant to the practice.

 

Programmatic Support and Administrative Responsibilities

 

  • Maintains record systems used to track health screening programs.
  • Works with Occupational Health Nurse Manager, Occupational Health Clinicians, Clinical Assistants, in tracking health screening and vaccinations
  • Review and/or develop patient education materials on occupational health Yes topics
  • Participates in the administration, including staff meetings, related to the
  • Occupational Wellness Program
  • Basic administrative duties as related to online surveillance systems.

Required Qualifications

 

  • Requires knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of specialist nurse practitioner duties.
  • Requires strong clinical skills
  • Willingness to accept constructive feedback, learn, and improve.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with both patients and clinical staff members.
  • Must have effective diagnostic and decision making skills in area of Occupational and Environmental Health nursing.
  • Must be able to work in a collaborative manner.
  • Must be able to diagnose patient conditions and make associated treatment recommendations.
  • Must be computer literate; skills must support medical applications (for example, electronic medical records & retrieval, appointment scheduling programs, tracking and screening programs).
  • Must be comfortable with telehealth and online surveillance programs.
  • Work with clinic lead and nurse manager to implement new or revised clinical and administrative programs.
  • Knowledge, skills and abilities associated with the practice of occupational medicine

 

Education/Training:

 

  • Graduate of a masters level nurse practitioner program with an emphasis in Occupational Health nursing, preferred. Will consider an adult or family nurse practitioner with experience in occupational health.

 

Licenses or certifications required:

 

  • Certification as an Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner, required.
  • Licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in the State of California with an active license and furnishing number, required.
  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse-S or similar certification, preferred.
  • DEA certificate, CURES registration, required
  • BLS/CPR certificate, required.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Preferred to have experience in an occupational health clinic with injury care in the California Workers' Compensation system.
  • Preferred to have experience conducting medical surveillance examinations
  • Experience and/or training in spirometry through a program approved by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)
  • Experience and/or certification as an Occupational Hearing Conservationist

 

Salary & Benefits
